Libertarian ? am i the only one ?

Re: Libertarian ? am i the only one ?
Trouble with libertarianism is that everyone that believes in it is so much of an individual no-one can agree on what the right thing to do is.
I am pretty sure a libertarianism convention looks a lot like The Jerry Springer show.

Libertarianism was the law of the land in the US in the 1800s.
- No federal income tax
- No welfare
- No drug laws
- No roads
- No laws against duels
- Everybody could carry a gun (it was expected)
- No laws against robber barons
- Federal Government expenditures primilary included the standing army which stayed at home (except in the case of Texas and California).

Libertarianism has its appeal, especially if you're young.
Who wouldn't like less/no taxes?
Who wouldn't like the govt not bossing you PERSONALLY around? (after all parents have bossed you enough)
Young folk tend to feel invincible, so they don't believe they'll need help from the govt.
It worked back in the wild west - and there is certainly an appeal to having more individual freedoms.
Of course, then everyone else gets the same freedom, and some of those folks aren't that nice. Too many of us here now imo for it to work. But I can understand the appeal - I'd be delighted to not pay taxes, and have the govt. not regulate me - who wouldn't. However, then there's the downsides...

Re: Libertarian ? am i the only one ?
All stupid arguments aside, Michael, I consider myself a social libertarian, but but I'm not too big on the fiscal stuff. I'd be happier with leaner government, but my biggest concern, especially at this time, is the increase of the feeling of security at the expense of the freedoms, however minor they may seem.
Which is why I declared myself politically independent inasmuch as I'm neither left-leaning nor right-leaning, just anti-tyranny.
Are you a part of the Free State Project, BTW?

From what I've heard, you're not far off. I have a couple of colleagues who are members of the local Libertarian Party, one who actually ran for office, and from their reports... Yeah. They couldn't organize a piss-up in a brewery.
