That doesn't sound right. I did not change my name at work or on my IDs (DL, passport, SS card) but I do have a bank account, credit cards, home mortgage, car financing, and other items in my married name, which has been and is recognized as a legal name. FWIW, I think that "alias" has negative connotations and is not really correct in this context. "Also known as" would be a better choice.

I think we've had a previous discussion on this issue. The short answer
is that the legality of one's name is not dependent on issuance of the
Social Security Card.

I posted the wording I read... not my choice of words. I believe the article was in a Dallas Newspaper about 2 to 3 years ago.

The question for the editor was in response to Legally using a last name and difference between an ALIAS and Legal name for purpose of Credit card application.

The husband's and wife's names were Weinberg and Burke respectively. The compromise was a new made-up name called Weinburke!
