Shredder Ended Work Backlog, U.S. Says
By JOHN M. BRODER (NYT) 833 words
Late Edition - Final , Section A , Page 22 , Column 4
ABSTRACT - File room supervisors at INS office in Laguna Niguel,
California, are charged with shredding as many as 90,000 documents to
get rid of vexing backlog; Dawn Randall and Leonel Salazar are accused
of ordering low-level workers to destroy documents, including passports,
asylum applications and citizenship papers, from February to April 2002
(M) Tens of thousands of pieces of mail come into the huge Immigration
and Naturalization Service data processing center in Laguna Niguel,
Calif., every day, and as at so many government agencies, it tends to
pile up. One manager there had a system to get rid of the vexing
backlog, federal officials say. This week the manager was charged with
illegally shredding as many as 90,000 documents.
Among the destroyed papers, federal officials charged, were American and
foreign passports, applications for asylum, birth certificates and other
documents supporting applications for citizenship, visas and work permits.

In many cases they don't even know who is who anymore - as even some
ORIGINAL documents were shredded. There is a good chance that a few hundred
or few thousand people in the west coast of the U.S. (I think it included
paperwork from Nevada and Arizona) have major problems with their status on
paper.... Some of them are probably still waiting patiently while their
applications have never been seen by anyone.... except the shredder.
