Hi All!! My husband IS HERE! the POE went fine, but he couldn't get an EAD stamp. We're on our way out right now, but we'll both sit together and post our experiences sometime within the next few days. Lizzie, I'll send you a PM back soon, ok?

James,

Thanks a lot for the info. I hope you dont mind correcting me in the
statement below i.e. When she receives the packet she does not have to
send anything back to them she will need to take all the completed
paperwork with her.

Once again thx for answering my previous question.

Greetings Peeps!

My wife is here and everything went smoothly. The POE person just asked her when we got married and that's it. I am just really relieved that she's here and we can go through the rest of this immigration process together, which makes all the difference.

For the interview at the consulate, she said it was pretty straight forward questions. It took about four minutes and she was approved. She said one K3er was there who got rejected because he didn't have all the paperwork. She ended up staying about 7 hours at the consulate. Overall a pretty uneventful experience, which is actually a good thing.

My next goal is to get her a SS card so she can get a license/ID card. Will post on that as I tackle it. Also, I think AOS needs to be filed. I'll look into that too but if anyone has info off-hand, please post

Regards

JM

They don't give EADs at POE anymore. Must apply for EAD in person, or
via mail. Then go to SS office, who will then verify. Will take six
weeks.

I also learned one more thing-the woman at the consulate said the time between the letter and the interview date is only 2 weeks! I hope that's true!

We'll be updating soon! We've been trying to acclimate Sohail to the cold weather, and we haven't had time to sit at the computer.

Hi Y'all!
Well we tried to get a SSN for my wife but SSA would not issue one until an EAD is issued. I think this is a new policy in effect nationally. I am thinking about getting an ITIN from the IRS for identification purposes. Also looking into filing for AOS now. Will keep this thread alive and kicking by posting progress!

Regards,

JM

Dealing with SSA is a big pain. INS approval is a PAPER process. Your local SSA office will send a request to INS via paper, will receive the request via a paper. Then the local SSA office will update the SSA computers when they get around to opening the mail. Theoretically, once they input the INS clearance, SSA should issue the card by the next business day. We have not found that to be the case. The national SSA 800# knows nothing, so you have to visit your local SSA office to get updates. Over 2 months of waiting so far. Geez, I am almost missing MSC (not!). James, I might have to follow your suggestion to get an ITIN, since we need to get going on filing our taxes, and I do not want to wait much longer for SSA...

Finally got the SS#. Had to go to the SSA office again. There had been a hit requiring human intervention. Someone else with a supposedly similar name and DOB had previously applied for a SS card. However, when the staffer compared the names and DOBs, it was obvious that it was not my wife trying to alter her identity. So they made an entry in the computer to issue the SS#. Called the 800# today, # was issued. 2.5 months from date of application.

I don't think so, my wife had an SS and I am now petitioning for her. She
still gets her pension statements, etc.

The number is kept the same as far as SSA is concerned (you only get a new
number in cases of fraudulent use of the number by another, people in hiding
from others and the like).

Double check, but I'm 99% sure the answer is no (unless one of the
exceptions supra apply to you).
