Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has gone through the process of executing a K1 Visa as well as importing their vehicle to the US?
Does it have to be at the same time the K1 is executed or can it be done at a later time?
I know that I need to get a letter from the manufacturer of the vehicle to find out whether or not it meets US requirements. Are there any sources you can refer me to?
FYI, I live in Ontario and would be using either the Peace Bridge or Queenston Lewiston Bridge in New York and will be travelling to Maryland.
Thanks,
Ian

You can go to the US Customs site for more information. You can look up the number of your POE and call them - they were very helpful for me. Depending on where your car was made, you may have to pay duties. If it was made in US or Canada, it's duty-free. If it was manufactured outside of these countries it is 2% for the 1st $1000 it is worth, and 2.5% thereafter (I think). You can ask your dealer to check where your car was made. As for when you do it, I'm not exactly sure. Call and ask.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Lucy is correct. Call them and find out. In our case, Jim drove his car down but was unable to get clearance from the manufacturer. Customs allowed him to have it here for six months (or was it a year). Anyway he arrived in August. In March he drove it back to Ottawa, traded it in for a newer vehicle which met specs and declared it at custom's then. They were fine with it because he explained about the first car. Don't know if this will fly in your case. He used the Lake Champlain crossing.
Why would you want to bring in it later if you are driving it down? There is no duty to be paid on the vehicle.

Actually I called Customs about this very issue yesterday, and they told me there is duty to be paid if the car was not manufactured in North America....just to clarify. There are also some useful documents on the US Customs website about moving in general.

Thanx Lucy and Rete for your replies.
To answer your question Rete... It was just a thought from my mother who visited Maryland and thought it would probably be better if I did have my vehicle with me. I've already booked my flight to Maryland and unless I can figure out all this car stuff... I'll probably be flying down and then will find my way back up after I have AP to "import" the car as a personal item. I'm hoping BCIS isn't going to have a problem with that.
Are there other alternatives?
Ian
