Right but I believe it could also be used to protect assets you could
inherit during the marriage. Am I wrong?
I have no idea how much money has to be spent in order to get a decent
prenup done, though.

If you file for divorce (what a nice thing to say to somebody who is just engaged! ), you can file in the US or in France (I guess you must go back there first, before filing). If you were to file in France, the community is divided according to the law of the State you got married in, unless you have a prenup' or a contrat de mariage (that I would imagine can be in a "notaire" in France?). If you file in the US, I have NO idea!

I had looked into the "contrat de mariage" before getting married, called a couple of attorneys in the States, realized what the process was like (2 attorneys takling to each other, etc) and that it would be rather expensive. So, we sat down with my husband and realized it didn't make much sense for us to make a prenup' (especially with the connotation it has in the US). Everything is approximate to give a general idea and a lead. It is as best as I understand it, but there is no guarantee that it is accurate and, if you are going to have make a prenup, you want to have it done right, so don't rely on what I say, but on what is written and what your attorney tells you...
