Default K-3 and Passport Expiry.

I have a question about passport validity.
Since K-3 is a 2 year visa. Should I have my passport valid for atleast 2
and half years at the time of the visa interview??. Which makes it 2 years
and 6 months beyond validity of the visa.

I know that the passport HAS to be valid for 6 months beyond visa issuance, more than that I don't know.
