hi, next year i'm going to get married here in italy i'm italian citizen and my
girlfriend is italian-american citizen we both live in italy, and we're going to live here for some more years my question is: can i obtain the US citizenship even if i still live here in italy? what am I supposed to to to obtain it? any particular procedure? is anyone else in my situation? bye and thanks a lot |
If you ever decide that you want to move to the US, then your wife would file a
petition with one of the US consulates in Italy for you and you would apply for an immigrant visa. You would then come to the US as a permanent resident and three years later be eligible for citizenship. Until then, there's nothing you can or need to do. If still married to your wife, you would have to be a permanent resident for at least 3 years, and have been physically present in the US for at least 18 months, and with no absence of more than 6 months at a time. And, if you don't reside in the US, then you can't be a permanent resident. Note: there are exceptions to some of these limits for spouses of military or government people assigned out of the country. Michael |
I was exactly in your situation, and Michael gave you the "rules". Or is your
girlfriend in the US military? R > > > > > > > > > |
