My finace is currently in the US as a college student. What are the papers that I
need from the INS. I was out at http://www.k1faq.com/ but it seems geared mostly
towards bringing them here. Spending $1K for a lawyer to take care of it for me
really isn't an option right now. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

That site does have info on adjusting from a tourist visa, which is pretty much the
same thing. Of course, it depends on the visa your fiance has.
Other filing info specifically for people here already is at:
http://www.ins.gov/graphics/howdoi/LPRApplication.htm
Of course, you can't do any of this until you get married.

If he is currently on a F-1 student visa, get married in the US (at least 60 days
after his last entry to the country), then fill out and file:
- I-130 (your petition for your alien spouse with birth certificates, copies of
passports, and marriage certificate)
- I-485 (his petition to adjust his status from F-1 student to spouse of a US
citizen, with proof of his visa (copy) and I-94)
- with the I-485, you need to file the I-864 Affidavit of Support, attaching your
last three years' of tax returns, as well as the I-693, which is the medical he has
to take even though he'll already have had one with the F-1 student visa
If necessary / interested, file:
- I-131 (advance parole necessary for travel outside the country until he is
officially adjusted post-interview, BUT you can only use it if he has NOT been out
of status)
- I-765 (application for an employment permit if he would like to work while waiting
for his adjustment)
The first step (apart from getting married) would be to go to your local INS office
and get the forms. Often, you get a check-list with it which is specific to that
particular INS location (i.e. whether to submit the I-693 at the time of filing, or
at the time of the interview etc. )...
Hope this helps, and good luck! Des

Thank you very much. This is just what I was looking for. I knew there would be a
stack of paperwork to do, but I wasn't sure which forms.
Thank you from Megumi and myself
