Default INS Arlington Interview Date

Miracles can happen. INS actually responded correctly to me going into the office
last month and have scheduled us for interview April 2nd. Of course, four weeks later
and it would be our second anniversary but what the hell - removal of conditions will
give us something to look forward too!

I haven't seen the letter yet but I'll copy it tonight and post it tomorrow.

Timeline:

Married 4/29/00. Filed I-130 & I-485 5/12/00 Fingerprinted: 9/01; appointment sent to
the wrong address so I went in in person to change it (had previously sent a change
of address letter) Feb 2002: Went into the INS office because I hadn't received the
interview date; they had sent one out - presumably to the wrong place. Received
appointment for 4/2/02 on 3/19/02

Here's a summary of the interview letter - it is *not* word for word, I just want to
give a feel for what they want. They have the cover page giving specifics and the
next couple of pages have lists for all the different kind of interviews.

Items to bring from first page (note it says in a few places, bring the original
document and one for your file. That seems backwards to me - they can have my copies
but they aren't getting any originals except for my I-94).

Appointment letter, passport, I-94 (if any) Medical I-693, appear even if not
completed. (Note this was not checked, I had submitted it with my application).
Federal income tax returns for the previous three years Current letter of employment
from you and/or your spouse showing rate of pay and hours per week Certified copy of
the court dispositions of arrests Your spouse () and evidence of a common residence
and shared life (include photos) Need 2000 taxes from spouse, see also list attached.

The second page has items for a marriage based interview:

1. Your spouse and proof of his/her US citizenship (Birth or naturalization
certificate or US passport)

2. Documents that establish a shared life:

Three affidavits. Here the letter refers to "the guidelines for affidavits outlined
in #2 above" but there is no #2. However, we can assume it means the affidavits you
supply if you don't have birth certificates though that's not wholly appropriate.
Anyway, mine are going to include: Name, address, immigration status, relationship
(if any) to me and them saying what a great couple we are. It does say they should be
notarized.

State and federal income tax returns filed since your marriage. The peitioning spouse
must submit form I-864 with copies of federal income tax returns for the last three
years. Note that although I have filed our 2001 tax returns I probably won't include
them because it's unlikely they will have processed them by then.

Apartment lease / mortgage with both signatures.

Credit cards in both names and credit card statements

Life insurance policy (showing either wife or husband as beneficiary)

Car registration

Children's birth certificates

Telephone / electric bills received since your marriage (all of them? )

W-2s for you and your spouse since marriage

Evidence of medical insurance for both you and your spouse

Receipts of major purchases showing name and address

A current letter from your bank on bank stationery stating the date your account was
opened or when it was converted to a joint account. The total depsoted for the past
year and the current balance.

Canceled checks since you opened a joint checking account (at least six months).

OK, a big list. Just pick and choose. Of course I'll take everything that isn't any
hassle. Basically I won't take a letter from my bank but I think I'll have the rest
of it. We'll have our eight month old daughter Caroline with us too.

I missed off the "all inteviews" part:

1. Valid photo identification for you and your spouse and any accompanying
family members
2. Your passport (valid) and if applicable the expired passport showing your
last entry into the US. Also, any work authorization documents issued to you
by the Service.
3. Your birth certificate
4. Original divorce decree or death certificate as proof of termination of all prior
marriages for both you and your spouse.
5. Marriage registry (Are they going to buy something off it for us? )
6. If you were ever arrested, the charging document(s) and final disposition(s)
from the court
7. A current letter of employment from your employer (and your spouse's) reflecting
the position(s) occupied, date(s) employment begun, salary and the name of the
person to contact in the event of an emergency.

Congrats Andy! Finally getting that interview from Arlington, eh?
I think we brought a bank statement or two (not an actual letter from the bank manager, just something showing we had mullah), can't hurt and should be easy to photocopy.
They seemed to have *really* slowed things down there, we filed at the end of February 2000 and got the interview August 2001, just 18 months. I guess 9/11 slowed things down to 23-24 months?

Regarding the court dispositions of arrests, my interview is fast approaching on
April 2nd, what do I need to do for this and is it necessary? I thought the FBI
fingerprinting handles all that criminal matter.

Anyone?

If you've ever been arrested, you need these. If you haven't you don't. The FBI check
is used to make sure that you are telling the truth ... at least about what happened
inside the US!
