Might have to reschedule this as I need to travel to Italy on 15 March and although I shouldn't need a passport to travel between Schengen countries, I'm not sure in practice if I will be allowed to board an international flight with no passport and no national ID card.

26 Oct 2012: Called USCIS to ask about MSC number not showing up and they checked and said everything was received and our forms were definitely in the system.
13 Dec 2012: The case status finally showed up in the system as "Initial Review" today, with the correct receipt date of October 18. I think they are catching up with these forms.
3 Jan 2013: Called USCIS to check on progress. Tier 2 rep reported that our case was transferred to the Houston field office on November 19 ("Didn't you get the letter?" "No, sorry, we didn't.").
24 Jan 2013: Received response to service request dated January 22. Actively processing, additional review, if you haven't heard from us in 6 months, blah blah. Standard meaningless "go away" letter.
6 Feb 2013: E-mail, text, online status update - APPROVED! "Decision" marked on Case Status online.
8 Feb 2013: E-mail, text, online status update - Post-Decision Activity: approval letter mailed 7 Feb.
25 Mar 2013: NVC representative verified receipt of case file in the mailroom (no number assigned yet). FINALLY.
