I ask because should we find ourselves in the position of needing to ask someone to sponsor, I want to have a clear idea of what I could be letting them in for.
Go to www.uscis.gov, Forms, and download the I-864 instructions. It's all spelled out in there.

Hi,

That doesn't sound like it'd be the hardest sell to a willing family member. I'll do some more research.

Cheers

Hi,

I had a look through some instructions. One point I couldnt quite deduce about joint sponsors that i wonder if you could help clarify: let's say my wife was a sponsor and her mother was a joint sponsor. Would that mean that they'd both have to be domicile in the USA and earn 125% of the poverty line income?

Or would steff's mum's income be sufficient to meet the criteria.

Thanks

If your wife does not meet the income requirement, and her mother does, then her mother can be a joint sponsor. Your wife does not have to meet the income requirement as long as there's a joint sponsor who does.

Your wife, if not already domiciled in the USA, will need to show proof of intent to do so. Her mother must be domiciled in the USA.

Her mother must meet the income requirements for her own household size plus the immigrant.

Domicile and financial status are different. By definition, the joint sponsor *MUST* live in the US, so domicile is never an issue for the joint sponsor. The sponsor, however, must still prove their own domicile or intent to domicile.

If the Sponsor (your petitioning USC spouse) makes 125% of the poverty guideline and is domiciled in the US, a Joint Sponsor is not allowed.
