"The sponsor must sign the original and each photocopied affidavit of support before a notary public or an Immigration or Consular Officer."
Am rather unsure about this. Does the AOS complete the I-864 and take it to the relevant officer? Where is the "notary public or an Immigration or Consular Officer" if in New York City? Will copies of tax returns and W-2s be sufficient?

Hi,
I can only help you with the I-864 question, from London.
I am taking my daughter with me to the US.
I miss-read the paperwork and thought that I could have
an original signed and notarized copy for me and a copy for
my daughter which the consular officer would compare and
sign at the interview.
WRONG.....I received an RFE.
They were very helpful and accepted most of the photocopy
but my wife had to send an original signed and notarized
copy of Page 6 only.
The interviewer said "your petition has been approved, pending
producing this Page" (+ one other piece of paper for something else) so I'm off back to London Thursday, for what I am lead to
believe is a formality.
Hope this helps, Hope !!

In the US, you can use any notary public - as found in banks etc. The sponsor needs to do this - not the beneficiary.
When abroad, it is difficult to find a US notary public, therefore consular officers can fill this role.
Your original tax returns went to the IRS, therefore photocopies from your personal records are what is called for.

When I went for my interview in London, I took my US wife's
W2's, Maryland state tax returns and her 1040's
He gave me back the W2's and the Maryland returns, he was
only interested in her main returns.
But, better to have everything, you never know !
good luck
