I-864, part C "Sponsor's Household Size" question 4 asks to name all the "persons who
otherwise dependent on you, as claimed in your tax return for the most recent tax year". I am single, live by myself but claiming 4 as an exemption. What should I put in I-864? Thanks for your help. |
Skiff,
Dependents create exemptions, but exemptions are not necessarily dependents. I-864 question 4 doesn't ask how many exemptions you claim, it asks you how many dependents you claim. Take another look at you tax return and the instructions for claiming dependents, and read them carefully. Hahaha! You are only claiming 4 on your W-4. Trying to get more money in your paycheck or
get more back at the end of the year, can't ever remember the formula. Regardless, you CANNOT claim 4 on your taxes unless you have real, physical people whom you claim as dependents. So, stop claiming imaginary people and you will not have a problem with the I-864. -- Jonathan _/ _/ _/ _/ K-1 Fiance Visa Immigration through to Adjustment of Status http://clik.to/getk1 K-1 & Adjustment of Status Links Page http://clik.to/K1andAOSLinks Newsgroup FAQ http://www.k1faq.com Arnaldo and Alvena's Fiance Visa Page http://www2.apex.net/users/thehydes/ Immigration and Naturalization Service http://www.ins.usdoj.gov {I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I won't have any problems regardless how many I claim - I make enough money. I was just
wondering what should I put on I-864. Btw, you can claim exemptions in some cases without having real people to back it up, for example if you are homeowner... > Hahaha! Please elaborate, as I DO own my own home and was NOT able to take any exemptions because
of that fact. Looking at my 1999 tax return right now, there is no place for anything but PEOPLE in the exemptions section. Look for yourself. One might be able to get some credit or whatever it is called for owning one's own home, but I see no place for exemptions due to that fact. Please, prove me and my tax attorney wrong. She would have gotten us more exemptions if she could have due to our owning a home. I would like to know where you got your information, for I could USE another exemption for owning my own home. This was meant as a friendly "challenge", not to prove anyone right or wrong. Heck, I would be elated if you were correct and could back up your statement with the facts of where and how to do what you claim can be done. I will enlighten my tax attorney. Thanks in advance for this information. Jonathan,
He may be thinking about exemptions as entered on a W-4 form, which would explain why he can't correlate his exemptions with his dependents.
