Default I 864 and I 864a

I had thought before that a married couple could not combine their income to make up enough money together to sponsor an immigrant. But now I’m researching more and it seems they can. Am I right?

Since I’m living here in the UK with my husband we need a joint sponsor for his visa. I would love to be able to use my sister as the joint sponsor but not sure she’d make enough on her own. But if we could use both her and her husband that would be enough.

His income would need to be carrying on after he moves to the USA.

hi Tom, thanks for your reply. I think I was confusing in my post.

Im a us citizen and hubby is a uk citizen. We’re living together in London and applying through the embassy in London for his visa. I need to find a joint sponsor since I’m living and working here in the uk. I’d like to use my sister and her husband (both of whom live in America). But I was unsure if I can use both their income combined?

Sorry, seems I was in a half asleep trance when replying.

Hopefully someone can confirm, but I believe you're correct that one of them can fill the I-864 and the other I-864A. The instructions mention they will be combined and the I-864A has a check box for spouse .

The sister will be the joint sponsor and completes an I-864. If her husband's income is needed, he completes an I-864a as a contributing household member.
