Default I-765, Q11, "Have you ever applied for EAD before?"

Hi all. On form I-765 question 11 asks "Have you ever before applied for employment authorization from USCIS?"

If I previously had an H1B or a J1 is my answer to this to be yes? Or does this apply only for employment authorization obtained using form I-765 and NOT for employment permissions such as H1-B and J-1?

Thanks

When you had an H1B or a J1, you did not apply for an EAD, did you? You actually had a visa in hand which allowed you to work.

There is a difference between a "work visa" and an "employment authorization document".

A person will apply for "employment authorization" when they don't have a visa that specifically allows them to work.

So... word of advice - take each question at face value and do *not* try to read into it something that isn't there.

If I previously had an H1B or a J1...
These are visas... *not* employment authorization. See? Easy.
