I'd like to know how long time it took for people to get their working permit? I'm on
a J-2 and after 7 mounths I still haven't got it.

I-765s have been taking a long time at some INS Service Centers, even as much as 5
months. 7 months seems a bit too long. There may be a problem with the case, and you
have to find out what it is.

First, you can try to call the INS Service Center. At 8
a.m., sit down with a phone with a redial, and constantly redial the number for an
hour before giving up. Have the I-765 receipt notice handy so that you can read
the control number to the Immigration Information Officer.

If the J-1 specialist at your spouse's international office is knowledgeable, and
helpful, ask for his or her help in making an inquiry. If not, you should ask your
Congressperson. Call the *local* office of the Member of the House of Representatives
for the district in which you
live. Ask to speak with a staff member in charge of making immigration inquiries.
See http://congress.nw.dc.us/rollcall/search.html to find your Congressperson.
