I-751 delay questions - please help

I am very confused about what I should do regarding the delay in processing I-751 removal of conditions at the Vermont Service Center.
I filed last month and received the Notice of Action informing me that my permanent resident status is extended one year. However, how can I travel outside the country for the next year after my green card expires? Can I get a stamp in my passport just by showing the NOA at my local office?
Also, I notice that the current processing time at Vermont is about a year and a half, so what do I do after a year? How can I get my permanent resident status extended further?
Thank you.

Just to let you know that we applied for an I-751 via VSC with a receipt date
early April 2002 and still have heard nothing. We did receive 2 NOAs (first one
right after we applied and a second one about 16 months later. My husband did
get a stamp in his passport BUT only after the original NOA expired (the second
one arrived five weeks after we went to get the stamp!). His N-400 interview is
in three weeks.
By the way, my husband traveled to Australia, Canada and Europe with his
expired green card and the original NOA letter without any trouble. Only
comment he received was "sure is taking those folks in Vermont a long time to
take care of these!"

Thanks for that info - good to know there shouldn't be any trouble travelling with the NOA. Was it easy to get the stamp in the passport after the first one expired? I thought you could only get a stamp if you had the approval, which is why I was confused!
Good luck with the N400
Good luck with the N400

We did not go to Newark for the stamp until the first NOA had expired (date on
GC was June 24 2002) which was after June 24, 2003. We got in line at Newark at
4 am and by 12 noon we were on our way with the stamp. Again - we did NOT try
to get the stamp until the first NOA had expired.

LKish,
I got the I751 approval today, just one week before the citizenship
interview.
I did two status inqueries through the customer service, and also
wrote a letter to Vermont myself - not sure which one helped.
Also, I read an experience from NY, in which the applicant was
adjudicated for both I751 and N400 at the same time, also took his
oath on the same day. Hopefully this will be the case for Newark.

We're in the same boat. Husband's conditional green card expired May 2, 2003. Got NOA (the 12-month extension) dated April 29, 2003 (yes, we cut it a wee bit close). Now, obviously, we're coming up on the end of the extension and we're wondering when to go and get another extension stamp pending approval of the permanent green card.
Do they send another NOA at some point, like automatically? I would assume not, but then, one never knows with these things.
My husband called the seemingly helpful customer service people a month or so ago and the person he spoke to told him to go get the stamp before the end of April. Does this sound right? And will we have to do the wait-in-line-at-Newark-in-the-middle-of-the-night thing again to get it done?

Early in the morning, say 6:45 am, is early enough. They only do this
on Fridays. Be prepared to spend about six hours there. Don't let them
send your husband to the 3rd floor. The officers on the 3rd floor will
tell him that they have to do another background check first. Try to
get the stamp on the 10th floor.

Wow, it sounds like going to a secret club or something. Thanks for the tip.
If anyone else has experiences getting this done at Newark, I'd love to hear them! I know plenty of people must be going over the 1-year mark from when the NOA is issued, since they're only processing stuff from NOVEMBER 2002. Egads.

I stood in line at 5.30 AM at Newark (June 2003). Got in around 7.30 AM. Was
directed to the right floor (don't remember which floor) explained that I
needed the I 551 stamp they asked to see my conditional green card &
passport. After checking whatever they needed to check they stamped my
passport & I was out at 10AM.

Just to clarify--you went for the stamp before the end of the 12-month extension? Or after?

My husband did the same thing at Newark July 2003. We went 2 days after the
extension letter expired. DO NOT GO ON WEDNESDAYS! We got there at 4:00 am, got
inside by 8:30am and sat waiting for our number to be called. Left with a new
stamp in his passport at 12:10pm as they now do a check on his background while
waiting. Passport should not be expiring within the next 6 months.
By the way, my husband got another extension letter about 2 weeks after we sat
in line. Don't know if they are still sending them out. His I-751 was finally
approved this past Tuesday after 1 year and 363 days! Only reason I knew that
it was approved was that we received a letter from our senator today stating
they had taken care of the situation and that it was removed (in actuality he
had his N-400 interview that day).

Duly noted!
One note, and I'm not sure if it matters. My husband's British passport expired last year, and he got a new one--I assume this won't be problematic as long as he brings both along.
Thanks much for the input!

Can you go get the stamp in your passport before the 12 month expiration (ie - the week before) rather than waiting until it expires??
