Default I-751

My 2 year conditional residency green card expired on 5/11/03 but I
got the notice on hand saying "Your alien card is extended on year-
employment and travel authorized" dated on 2/26/2003. I need to travel
out of US on March this year and returning on the same month. Is my
status valid to 5/11/04 or 2/26/04.

This has just been discussed and the consensus is that there is no consensus
Some say the one year extension is to the card and therefore it's from
the date the card expires; others say it extends the card a year from the
date of the I-797.

To be safe I would try to get an I-551 stamp in your passport from the local
USCIS office.

In any case your status will not expire and you can get back into the US on
an expired GC - though the obvious problem is persuading the airline of
that!

Andy.

You must go to the local office after the year extension you received expires, otherwise they won't let you get a stamp if you go now...

This question was addressed a few months ago by a USCIS memo.
