How to read old postings?

Apparently my outlook express lets me read only the last 300 messages of the
newsgroup. I need to read a response to one of my queries from few weeks
back. How do I read the old mails? Are the archived or do I need to tweak my
setting in outlook express somewhere? Thanks.

http://groups.goog-
le.com/groups?group=misc.immigration.usa should have
what you need and more. I'd hope that Outlook will let you tweak
expiry settings too, but I don't use it myself.

I don't know about Outlook Express but you can read the archives in Google. Just go to www.google.com and click on the tab named 'groups'.
Search for the name of the newsgroup you wish to search in, e.g. this one is misc.immigration.usa.
Once you're in the newsgroup, you can conduct a search as if you were doing a normal search with a search engine.
You should be able to see messages previously posted by yourself.

Old messages are probably being deleted from the server from which you get
the news
feed, especially if it's a free service. You have no control of this in your
newsreader.
As has been mentioned, google is a wonder web interface to news, many people
have
abandoned their newsreader in favour of it. If you prefer a news server,
there are
non-free ones out there that keep more history on line, for example,
www.supernews.com.

Best way is to go to Groups (in google) and then hit
"Advanced Search". Type in your author name (NC Penguin in
your case), and the name of the newsgroups. That will give
you just your postings of the last 11 years
) Provided that
author name has not been changed of course.
If you remember the subject line (or a significant word,
that you believe is not used much), use that.

I might want to add there is a newsserver I use all the time
and it is free. Totally independent of your Internet
Provider usable on any computer any location, they do not
even mind if yo give your password away. I just checked, I
just saw I still have almost 1700 messages on my screen from
this group, and if I would load again probably more.
It is fast, complete, reliable and I do not get any fees
from them
) Works so much faster and easier than Google,
which, I agree, has a fantastic archive.
The server name is: news.cis.dfn.de
You do need an ID and password, but again: no restrictions
and it is free. Just mail them: ,
register and you will receive a password on the next working day.
The server seems to be the result of a big project of the
Berlin University and many people use it.
