Default how long for I-485?

I sent in my I-485 application after xmas. About when should I be
receiving a receipt notice from USCIS? I haven't received anything
yet.

You don't say where you filed it, so the information can vary somewhat, but
I would allow about four weeks. There have been times when it took two
months or more.

I believe in the past, you could file with the local office, which
would've been Tampa, FL for me. But as of the new applications, it's
supposed to be sent to Chicago, so that's where I sent mine.

Why would it take >2months? How soon after I get my receipt notice
will they notify me for fingerprinting and get my EAD? Thanks.

That depends on the basis for your I-485. If you sent it to Chicago (or
before to a local office), it would have been a family-based one.

    > Why would it take >2months?

Sometimes, USCIS offices don't even get around to opening envelopes for a
long time. Sometimes, that happens because of budget cuts or priority
changes, or sometimes it happens because of a sudden surge in applications,
for instance just before a law is about to change.

The EAD should take less than 90 days. If it takes longer, you can go to the
local USCIS office and request an interim one.

Fingerprinting usually takes place a few months before approval, since
fingerprints expire.

Yes, it's a family-based one. Marriage to US Citizen. How long should
I wait for my receipt notice before I should start worrying why it
hasn't arrived yet? Thanks.

As I said, I'd allow at least four weeks. No reason to get worried. Besides,
you still have your return receipt (you did remember to send it by
certified mail, return receipt requested, right?)

wow, 21 month wait. Hopefully, I'm one of the lucky one and only have
to wait 7 month.

Why such a big difference? Does it depend on what type of immigration,
like employment, marriage, family?

Employment-based ones are processed somewhere else, and don't even show
in the figures. Processing times can be variable for any number of
reasons - mostly just luck of the draw, though.

Marriage-based cases tend to be prioritized over other cases, because US
citizens (voters) are affected. Delays can occur during fingerprint
checking and other processing steps.

So overall, it's really mostly luck.
