How long does the I-131 generally take to be approved, and what are the conditions?
What does it actually allow one to do? Thanks, Steve

It allows you to leave and return to the US without abandoning your adjustment of
status application, while you are waiting for a green card. Once you get the card,
you don't need AP anymore.

The time to get it varies by INS office, everywhere from same day to 90 days. All you
have to do is validate that you are applying for AOS and tell them why you want it. A
simple reason of "to visit family" is sufficient. See this link:
