Default How does she claim duel citizenship USA/Canada?

Hi Again,

First off let me thank you for all of your advice and knowledge..

Secondly, now that I've ascertained (from all you kind folk) that my mother is an
American because of her mother's birth in the US and subsequent time spent their by
her mother.

How does one go about claiming said citizenship? My mother is interested in pursuing
this avenue... she wishes to move to the United States.

Any information would be wonderful.

Thank you again

Isaac

Her age shouldn't matter She should contact the US Consulate closest to her and ask
what she would need to apply for a US passport. She could also apply for a
citizenship certificate - but this can take 6 months or more, the passport is faster.
Take Care. Shelley

She should contact the nearest US consulate to ask them about verifying that she
really is a US citizen. If they agree then all she has to do is to apply for a US
passport, and they will tell her what documentation she needs to present in order for
one to be issued to her.

Your mother should note that the income tax laws of the US are unique in that they
consider all worldwide income of a US citizen to be subject to US income tax, even if
the person does not live in the US and even if the income was not earned in the US.

If it's determined that your mother is a US citizen, but that she didn't know this,
the US Internal Revenue Service will not normally fine her for failing to file in all
years up to now, but they will require her to file US tax returns for a number of
past years, (usually the previous seven years), and to pay any US tax due on this
income. Most often, no income tax is due because of credits for tax paid to other
countries, and exemptions granted to US citizens who live abroad, but sometimes tax
can be owed.

Your mother may want to contact a tax accountant who is knowledgeable in the laws
that apply to US citizens who live abroad, in order to calculate how much income tax,
if any, your mother would owe if she attempts to acknowledge her US citizenship.
