To anyone who can help.
I am trying to bring my fiancé to the Untied States. I met her in China when I
was teaching over there as part of a College-intern program. I have recently
returned to the United States to work on my masters degree and work. I have
submitted all the INS forms here and now her case is in Guangzhou. Can anyone
give me some idea of their experience in working through Guangzhou. For
example, what is the length of time for the entire process, what things should
we be aware of.
Needless to say, we both are nervous and have heard many horror stories. At the
risk of sounding sappy, I really love her and want things to work out. So I am
posting this message in hopes that someone familiar with our situation can give
advice. She has had to endure quite a bit of criticism for her courtship with a
'waiguoren', and she I just think the world of her... so as sappy as I may
sound... Can someone please contact me so that I can ask questions and listen to
some advice.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Chris

Hi,
I'm in the process of K1 visa research, but not in China. This might not exactly
answer your question but there're lots of info. out there(net) you can go for more
information i.e. stumbled on this just now
http://129.109.159.93/Keven/k1visa/index_k1.htm
I didn't go thru it though, noticed a section K1 visa Packet3 updated (in China -U.S.
Consulate in Guangzhou) Hope this helps, more or less

Hello Chris, I am in the same boat. I hope you are having better luck than we are.
Our case was sent to Guangzhou at the beginning of November. My fiance got the forms
around Nov 10. She sent them back in registered mail. Two different mailings, one
with the 169 form and one with the 230 form. We waited a month, and checked in the
beginning of December to see how much longer it would be until she got an
appointment. They said they were still waiting for the 230 form. They said that we
should fax a letter requesting another one for her to fill out, which we did. almost
3 weeks later, and we still have not seen the form. I then contacted the consulate,
to find out where the form is. They said that if her fax machine said the fax went
through, then they must still be working on it. Still working on sending her another
copy of the form after 3 weeks! We told them that the post office says they signed
for the original form on Nov 13. So they said that they still did not show it as
being received, but it must be being worked on, since the post office says they
signed for it. I suggested that maybe it was lost, and they said no, if the post
office said it was received, then they have it. But they have no record of it after
6+weeks. I asked to talk with a supervisor, because this was crazy, they said that
they did not have any supervisor that could talk with me. So I called the consulate
back and asked for one. Got his name and voicemail. Left him a quick email address,
and this morning I got an email from him asking what I need. I sent him an email, and
hope to hear back in a day or two.
I wish I could give you better news, but they sound like they are real messed up in
guangzhou. I think they are overwhelmed. This year they are on pace for four times as
many K-1 visas as last year.

I see you have heard the statistics too. It appears as if K-1s in China are beginning
to take off in popularity like they did in the Phillipines during the 90s. I see this
trend only increasing as China's WTO membership opens up the country to more contact
between Chinese and Americans.
I suspect revisions to K-1 procedures there will have to be undertaken. If they don't
they are likely to become overwhelmed. Especially when you factor in all the student
visas that are processed there each year (Chinese comprise the largest percentage of
US student visas, something around 55% if I recall correctly). At the very least they
should allow the other consulates to do K-1s. It's silly to route them all through
Guangzhou.
Just my opinion and speculation, offered as food for thought.
