Yikes!
When I first started school 3 years ago, I was told "make sure you
don't file your request for OPT too early or else it will be approved
before you want to work, etc" So, silly me...didn't follow up on this
soon enough and now the processing times are supposedly going to take
longer than expected. I essentially have a job offer for just after I
graduate (early-mid May) and so I would like to work full time at that
time. If my EAD isn't approved in time, could I consider this Summer
semester to be my "holiday" semester (yes, I've taken 2 consecutive
semesters at full course load) and therefore could I work full time???
Ugh, I don't know if I'm making much sense here, but I'm basically
trying to find a way to start working full time in May. (I'm currently
working part-time on campus...this job would be a full-time job at the
same campus).

You can't work until the EAD arrives, but at least it is possible that you
will get it in time. Sometimes it takes less than tree months (although it
can also be twice as long).
