Hi,
I hope someone can give me some advice. I got married legitimately to my boyfriend 3 years ago so that we could be together in New York. We have been together 6 years now but have been separated for one as things just didnt work out.
I got my permanent residents card last year.
If I file for divorce how will this affect my immigration status? I have built a life for myself here now and have a great job and do not want to return to the UK. Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
SJ

How does one get married illegitimately? ![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
If you have a 10-year card, your divorce will *not* affect your immigration status at all. Your ex, however, will still be on the hook as your financial sponsor with respect to form I-864. Divorce does not release him from responsibility. When five years have passed since you were *first* issued a GC, you can apply for naturalization if you want.

Republic of Londistan and collect dole for the rest of your life?

Hi Ian, do you know where I could get some more info specifically regarding marriage to an american? You seem to know a lot and it looks like this is my only option. I do have an American girlfriend, btw I'm not just scheming, whether she wants to marry me or not is another question...
Cheers

If you are actually in love and want to be married, you "probably" can immigrate through marriage.
Here are some guides.

If you have specific questions, people will want to know some things
Where are you?
Where is she?
What citizenship do both of you have (apparently she is a USC)?
If you are in the U.S., how did you enter (visa? type?) and when?
