Default Got SSN today, no problems! :)

Hello all!!

After postponing our wedding by 3 weeks to allow time for Mark's name to be entered into the BCIS system, we went down to the Richmond, VA SSA office this morning to apply for his SSN. Our decision to wait served us well.

Only about half the seats in the waiting room were filled when we arrived. Mark's name was called 30 mins later. We brought with us:

1) His passport (proof of identity)
2) His birth certificate (proof of age)
3) His I-94/K-1 visa (proof of legal alien status)
4) A copy of the SSA memo regarding K-1 visa holders as being work authorized. (You can download it here: http://www.kamya.com/ssn/em00154.pdf)

We brought the memo just in case the SSA official didn't realize that Mark's K-1 visa authorized him to work, thus erasing the need for him to provide an EAD. Luckily for us, the SSA official (a Ms. M. Southall) was very up-to-speed with how to process applications from immigrants. She didn't need to see the memo, plus she automatically checked to see if he was in the BCIS system without him needing to ask. She informed Mark right away that he was, in fact, in the system.

After about 5 mins of going through the paperwork, etc., she handed Mark a receipt letter stating he'd get his card in the mail within 2 weeks. YAY!!!

We're getting married tomorrow (another YAAAAY!!!!) and it's nice knowing that postponing our wedding wasn't in vain. Good luck to all of you still waiting for your SSNs, and to those who still have to apply for them. Hopefully this will give you some reassurance that it's not always a nightmarish experience.

Congratulations on obtaining the SSN and also your wedding.

My son (then 11) and I never had a problem obtaining our SSN #'s last
July. Just presented our passports, I-94, birth certificates and
marriage certificate (for my last name change). Didn't even have to
present a memo to the woman showing our eligiblity. Six weeks later,
the cards appeared in the mail.

Just a little update...

Mark got his SS card in the mail today, with the envelope postmarked June 20th. That means from the time he applied for it to the time it was processed at the post office, only three days had passed. I'm impressed.

If anything, I can only stress how glad we are that we decided to wait and apply for his SSN three weeks after his US entry. It was definitely worth the wait!

~ Jenney

p.s. The wedding was very short, very informal, but totally great!! So glad to finally be Mrs. Stevens!!

Mark & Jenney

Thing1 and I just wanted to say congratulations on your marriage - your wedding was the same day as ours

Did you have sunshine on your special day? We did. 85°F, blue skies and sun all day until 5 minutes before the ceremony. Then we had buckets of rain during the hour we had chosen for our wedding and photos.

Glad you had good fortune with your SSN, that's what we were going to do but didn't grrrr. We would definitely recommend that people wait at least 10 days before applying for their SSN.
