Default To get Interim EAD or not?

Hi all,

I'm in a little fix and confusion right now, hope you can give me advice

I sent my application for EAD in Oct and received a NOA that stated my
application should get processed by Jan 14. I received nothing since from
the local Newark office until yesterday, they sent me a letter that asked me
to go for an "interview for employment authorization document (EAD)" on Jan
22 at the Newark office.

My question is this: I've read here and there on the NG that people have
gone for a biometrics appt and/or fingerprinting appt before going down for
their EAD interview, but I've never received such a thing, and now this
letter asks me to go straight for the interview. Should I be concerned that
I don't have my biometrics done yet?

Also, will I be able to work, say from the day of the interview or do I have
to wait longer to get the actual EAD card? Reason being, if it turns out I
have to wait another month or so after the interview before they'll mail me
the EAD card I might rather go down on Jan 15 (day after 90days) to get an
interim. A week extra wait is fine, but another month isn't...

Happy New Year to everybody, and may the New Year bring Good news to you!

G'day.

Every office is different. I can only tell you what happened to me, at
the Washington DC office.

The EAD is treated as a seperate process to your AoS application. So
when they ask you to come in for your EAD interview, it means they are
setting you up for your EAD, and thats all. So your
biometrics/fingerprinting for your AoS could happen either before or
after your EAD appointment, and is not something to worry about.

They will take a fingerprint of one finger, photograph you again, and
(at least in DC) issue your EAD on the spot. I have no idea if Newark
issue them on hte spot or not, some offices do, some do not. People who
get them from the Vermont Service centre by mail, for instance, have a
heavy plastic card that looks like a drivers licence.. yet mine was
done in the DC office and is a cardboard card laminated with plastic..
you'll have to wait and see.

From the moment it's issued you can legally work in the US until it
runs out in 12 months. But most employers (and the Virginia DMV for a
drivers licence) requre you to *also* have a Social Security Number.
And DSS will not issue one without an EAD.

So the moment you have your EAD in your hot litle hand, go striaght to
DSS and apply for a Social Security Number as well. I did mine same
day, but it took DSS a week or so to send me the card.

Hope that helps,
Mark
