Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
Hello.. Ive just stumbled across this form and I’m confused. Bit if background info... I’m US citizen and husband is UK citizen. Married 20 years. We currently live in the U.K. for the past 7 years. I am a permanent resident here. However we lived in the US for 14 years prior to moving here. Husband got US green card way back then. We left the US to move over here. Now we are planning on moving back to US. I am currently starting to file the I-130 petition thru the US Embassy in London. I’ve read everything that I need to do, but on the website I came across this I-DS260 form. What is this form for.. something about electronic filing?? I will be sending my Petition by mail to the Embassy Visa unit as it states to do for embassy filing. Do I need this??? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks |

Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks You do not need the DS-260 at this stage, but you will need it soon. You've seen a mention of 'electronic filing' because the DS-260 will be completed and submitted online. It is the Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application form. It will be worth familiarising yourself with the remainder of the IR-1 process after the I-130 stage so that you can prepare yourself for what is ahead - I found the prior knowledge very helpful when applying for my own visa (CR-1). There is a wiki article here that outlines the processes and what's to come next. In a nutshell, the DS-260 makes up a huge portion of your husband's visa application, and it will be one of the next things you fill out once you've had confirmation that your I-130 has been approved. I have no idea about the IR-1 timelines at present, but I understand they move relatively quickly compared to some other visa types, so maybe get yourselves familiar. :) I don't know your personal circumstances, but have you considered naturalising in the UK before you move back to the US? Your husband didn't gain US citizenship during his time in the States, which is why you're having to go through this process a second time; it would be a shame to potentially put yourself in the same situation if there's even a minimal chance that one day in the future you might wish to return to the UK? Just some food for thought in case it hadn't occurred to you already. Good luck on your journey! P.S. There are lots of IR-1 timelines and write-ups in this forum, which might also be helpful to you should you have time for a little search. |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
Thanks so much for your reply... I delved a bit deeper and I was able to finally figure it out myself. This is the 3rd set of Visas I’ve done. Once for my husband to US, one for me to UK and now this one for my husband again to US... boy have they changed over the years!! My husband is a proud Brit and stubbornly refused to get US citizenship before we move to UK..so here we r again!! Lol Ive read that the US isn’t very keen on dual citizenship.. what is your thought? i appreciate all the other information and link you’ve given me. I think I have it all down now. But don’t be surprised to see another ? from me ! Its good to know that the Visas are moving fairly fast as we need to move by April 2020 as we have 2 cats and the heat embargo for flying pets goes into effect between May and September. As we r moving back to Texas where it gets warm quickly we need everything completed and approved before then. I don’t see any reason why his Visa wouldn’t be approved. Would a cover letter be of any use requesting they prioritise it due to the cat situation? I sent one with mine coming to the U.K... Again thank you !!! This forum has been a wealth of information numerous times!!! |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
A cover letter won't do any good. It will take as long as it takes. They won't prioritize it.
There is absolutely no problem with holding dual citizenship. Many people on here are dual US and UK citizens, and even hold a 3rd or 4th as well, from other countries. Rene |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
It states on the DS-260 they want addresses dating back to age 16. It also states that everywhere I’ve looked. what if my UKC husband can not remember addresses dating back that far? That’s 33 years of addresses... what does one do if you can’t remember? Maybe the city but not the address and definitely not the phone numbers??? |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
Give the information that you can. He can consult records from other sources to refresh his memory - for example if he has old bank statements or documents with other address on them.

Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
What if he can’t get the information back that far?? Can you just give the city & county... he doesn’t have any old bank statements or documents prior to around 1997. He was a previous US resident from 1999 to 2012 when we moved here to U.K. .... but his previous addresses here in the U.K. he doesn’t remember the actual address or phone numbers. As I said that’s 33 years worth of addresses and he moved a bit. We have 4 just from the time we lived in the states. Who keeps that type of information that far back?? Can you explain this at the interview?? We’ve had 2 addresses since moving here in the U.K. in 2012. That’s now six different addresses from 1997. How is this possible?? |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
If city and state is all he remembers, then just list that. Use an additional sheet of paper if you need more room.

Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
It will be his ancient U.K. addresses he won’t remember... so we will just put city and county and hope system takes it!! thanks for your help!! |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
Does the DS-260 have to be “approved†or is it just a formality? Can you file it and continue on with the medical and interview or do you have to wait for it to be accepted?
my understanding is you just fill it out and the system will let you know your done and you print it out and take it to the interview at the embassy.... thanks for any help !! |
Re: Form I-DS260. HELP ??????
Your understanding is correct.
