Filing I-140 and I-485 at same time
I read that it's now possible to file the I-140 petition and I-485 for
adjustment of status at the same time, to streamline the process. How
does this work exactly ? I assume nothing can be done with the I-485
until the petition is approved, so is it just that the adjustment is
processed more promptly, because it's already in the system ?

Actually, it's more than that. If you file both together, they will end up
on the adjudicator's desk together. So rather than waiting for the I-140
to be approved, and then waiting again for the I-485, you would now just
wait for the I-485. The adjudicator will take a few more minutes to also
work the I-140 and then immediately do the I-485.
