Extension of admission in H4

New H1-B and dependent H4 extension were granted simultaneously. H4 then traveled
outside the USA and returned on the original visa without showing the new I-797A.
I-94 admission was granted until the termination date of the original visa, which is
in about 4 weeks time.
What is the procedure to extend the H4 admission until the date on the latest
petition? Assuming this is a straightforward process, does the H4 maintain status as
soon as the application is filed? I guess the extension won't be processed before the
I-94 expires.
Many thanks for any advice.

You have two options:
- the long way: file form I-539 before the H-4 status expires. As long as the
application is timely filed, the H-4 remains in status.
- the quick way: leave the US and come back, showing the I-797 this time. Going to
Canada or Mexico is enough, but be sure to surrender your I-94 when you leave
(you'll have to get out of the car and find an INS officer to surrender the I-94;
normally, the checkpoint isn't set up to collect them). When coming back, you'll
fill out a new I-94 and pay a $6 fee for it.
