Embassy interview questions

Just two quick questions, really :

1. On what grounds might an applicant fail a medical examination and be denied a visa?

2. What sort of clothing is appropriate for the interview? It doesn't say anything on my packet paperwork, and all my smarter clothes are elsewhere, so I'd like to know if I should look into getting them shipped to me.

Thanks for any answers,

Dynamo.

1. Under U.S. visa law some people are permanently ineligible to receive an immigrant visa and are not eligible to enter the United States unless they have obtained a waiver of the permanent ineligibility. These include persons who have been afflicted with a disease of public health significance, including those who are HIV-positive, a mental disorder which is associated with a display of harmful behavior, drug addicts/abusers, and those with criminal records. ........ A determination on a person's eligibility for a visa cannot be made until the day of the formal visa interview. If the applicant is found ineligible for a visa, the consular officer will advise the applicant if he/she is eligible to apply for a waiver of the permanent ineligibility and of the steps which must be taken to apply for and process the waiver.

2. When is your interview? Do you have enough time to receive your formal clothes through shipping? Cant you think of buying a new pair? I would think one should look 'presentable' for the interview. That doesnt mean you wear a suit nor should your clothes create public disorder.

Thanks for the health info - I'll give it a look through.

Well, I do have some presentable clothes - just nothing spectacular, and certainly not a suit. By the sound of things, I think they'll do though - smart enough trousers, and a smart enough shirt, with a smart enough tie.

My interview would be on the 2nd of August, so I'd have plenty of time to get my smarter clothes shipped down though. It's more a case of avoiding putting other people through the hassle of sorting it out for me, really.

I know they really don't expect to see you suited and booted for the Embassy interview. Presentable is good enough. Don't cause more hassle for yourself by shipping clothes if what you already have is neat & tidy.

For our AOS interview in the US, we both wore casuals (t-shirts, pants & sneakers), and the officer didn't look down on us in any way and we were also approved, so they're not predjudice!! ;)

Dynamo,

1. TB and HIV come readily to mind. My young stepson was initially denied his K4 visa because the examining physician did not make an entry for all the items on the medical report form - he omitted the question about pregnancy as being not applicable. The consular officer did not see it that way and required my wife to go back to the doctor to have the form completed.

2. Flip-flops, cut-off shorts with a hole worn in the seat, and a tee-shirt that was last used to clean one's hands after performing an oil change on the family car.

1) Make sure certain body parts are not readily seen
2) Make sure you're clean.

Seriously, my (now) husband wore a pair of trousers, with a smart shirt, sans tie.

Just make sure you look neat and clean and they really don't care what you wear. Yes, take the interview serious obviously, but don't go to any hassle or expense when a decent pair of jeans, shirt and shoes will do.

I'm glad that this isn't some kind of formal exam! That makes me feel a little better.

It made me feel a LOT better, too, as I just realised I'd already left my standby smart clothes in America. :(

Oh well. If half-smart will do, then half-smart I've got. I can manage that. :D
