If you can, get the SSN before you get married
I don't know about the EAD because my husband waited and got his when he applied for AOS (since our office gives them out on the same day)

vermont...luckily, for the i-129f anyway, unsure as to everything else, its all conflicting info, but the consensus does appear to be what you say, get the ssn first, but i thought you needed ead for that, and also thought ead was not really worth bothing about if we are gonna marry within the first month

somewhere on the net there used to be a list of the offices and the time it takes to get an EAD at each, if you need to find out

Hi All,

The best way to be assigned an SSN is to submit an application at your
local SSA office. Take your birth certificate if you have one readily
available, passport and I-94 with K-1 status and do it ASAP. after entry.

Find local office:

http://s3abaca.ssa.gov/pro/fol/fol-home.html

Form SS-5:

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

If you are a female you will need to apply for a corrected card, if you
are going to use your married name for employment and tax purposes.

Then you again go to your local office with Form SS-5 with passport and an
EAD card in married name.

SSA will need to verify you current status/documents with BCIS both
times. If it can be done through SAVE at the time you apply, you should
have the card within 2 weeks. If they can't verify you through SAVE the
SSA office will send a Form G-845 for manual verification and no telling
how long that will take. In that case you can go back into the SSA office
with your documents occasionally (no more than once every two weeks) and
ask the office to check you through SAVE.

SSA will not assign an SSN or issue a card when your status is within 14
days of expiring, so the K-1 status is really only good for 76 days to
apply and have status verified.

Take care,

Mike

Michael D. Young, thanks. I put it down.

A question.
I have heard that if you come on K1 visa it is better and faster to get SSN before marriage and to change old name on new name after marriage and slowly to get SSN with new name after marriage.

when is it better to apply for SSN?

Thanks,
Olenka

Hi All,

File for the SSN ASAP after entering the country. From the problems other
have had it looks like you aren't going to be assigned an SSN and issued a
card in the married name until you have your one year EAD card in your
married name.

The reason for this is if you come in after being married and want to be
issued your original SSN and card or a corrected card in the name of Mrs.X,
SAVE is going to have the K-1 info as Ms.Y, so that gets you a G-845
verification and I don't see how BCIS can say Mrs. X is work authorized
since they have never issued anything to Mrs. X that authorizes work.

Take care,

Mike
