Default EAD renewal questions

Hey all

So we're at the nine month mark for AOS, and honestly, with the updated processing times it's probably not unrealistic to think we could be waiting nine more months.

With that in mind, I guess we should think about renewing our EAD. Mine expires in September of this year, so I think I should probably send it off soon?

Has anybody got any experience doing this? Am I correct in thinking that by filing the EAD renewal before the expiry date, because I'm awaiting AOS I'm granted an automatic six month extension?

Thanks

In years past, it was quite unusual for someone awaiting AOS to have to renew their EAD. But is it too soon for you to do so, not in my opinion. I would definitely send it off early May and it will probably be renewed for either one year less the time still valid on your first EAD or for one year with a start date as of the date of the expiration of the old one.

Yep - quite unusual indeed until recently. With USCIS' new processing time, they give an average for family based adjustments going through Philadelphia as a date range of 9.5 - 19 months. I would assume 9.5 months is the absolute fastest it will process, and 19 months may be the oldest case they currently have. So I suspect we'll fall somewhere in the middle of that as a fairly normal case.

Do it now - i'm similar to you, my EAD expires mid august, i'm sending my renewal off this week. The usual 90 day processing rule is out the window.

I've filled out another I765 and I131, made a copy of my current EAD, and included the barcode that came with my original EAD 'for faster renewal' as it lists on the paper. I'll be sending it off tomorrow.

Yeah that sounds similar to my package. I've made a copy of my current EAD, included a copy of the original I-765 approval notice, and my I-485 NOA. Is that all we need to send off?

Actually those were almost the exact same timelines back in 1998-1999.

From what I've read, yes.

Make sure to do another I-131 too if you need re-entry

I got my receipt notice last week.

Read at the bottom of it - if you fall into the criteria (Which i think you do?) - it explains that the notice serves as an automatic 180 day extension along with your expired EAD in the event that you don't receive the replacement card prior to your current one expiring.

Yeah, I read that also. My only concern is that I'm not sure how that would fly with the DMV when extending my drivers license.
