I got my EAD approved a couple of weeks ago. Recently, a handful number of =
people were laid off in my company. I am therefore wondering what might hap=

Thanks.

What is your EAD based on? I-485? If so, how long ago was the I-485 filed?

Yes, it is based on I-485, and it was filed in January 2004.

Yes, you can legally take a new job authorized by the EAD. However, you
will be taking a risk that USCIS will find out that you left the I-140/I-485
employer within 6 months of the I-485 filing, and will determine that you
are not eligible for I-485 portability.
Here's a couple of helpful links concerning I-485 portability:

http://www.murthy.com/UDportis.html
The safest thing for you to do is to have your next employer get H-1B status
for you as a backup, so that you won't have to leave the U.S. if the I-485
is not approved.
