Default EAD in production, can I work?

Hi, today I received an email that my EAD had been ordered for
production March 1st and that if it had not arrived in 30 days, to
contact USCIS.

Wondering, may I start work right away? I have a soc. sec. card
already... or should I wait util I have this card in hand?

Best,
NJ

It's up to the employer if he wants to hire you without proper work authorization or not. If he does, you'll be forgiven by USCIS for working unauthorized, but the employer faces a fine if he's discovered. Most employers want to actually see the EAD, they need it for their I-9 form which keeps a record that each employee is indeed legally employable.

True, but I will be self employed! :-)

Do employers even ask for an EAD if you look and speak and act like an
american, how would they know you need an EAD to work? Especially if
you have a SS number?

Your SS card will have a legend on it which says "valid only with DHS work authorization", so it gives the employer a heads-up that you aren't yet a permanent resident. Also, maybe some applications ask up front if you are a citizen, or what your status is here.

As for being self employed....well....you're technically not work authorized w/o the EAD. Totally your choice whether to work or not anyway...what are you going to do, fire yourself? LOL My husband was self-employed as well, but he ended up having about a 10-day gap between work authorizations. He continued going into the rug shops and meeting with clients, pursuing business, but he didn't accept any pay during that time.

Work is work, regardless of who the employer is. Until you get your green card, you need an EAD to work for any employer, even yourself.

Employees, regardless of citizenship, are required to submit a completed I-9 form along with supporting documentation to their hiring employer. Most foreigners who haven't had their AOS interviews yet present either their unexpired EAD cards, or a combination of their drivers licenses and SSN cards. Since (as Rene mentioned) the SSN card would have the legend on it, the EAD would be required in most cases.
