PROBLEM:
Entered as K1, Got married, filed I-485 (perm res.) and I-765 (work auth)
Finally got my EAD card today (from the completed I-765)
Went to the Social Security office to get my social security number (without
it, the EAD is completely useless. I can't work with just the EAD I need
the EAD + the SSN)
They tried to look me up in their systems (with my name and the "A" number
that figures on the EAD card) but couldn't find me.
QUESTIONS:
1 - Has anybody been through this? what are your experiences?
2 - If you have been through this, how long did it take for you to be able
to get your Social Security Number?

Many people have experienced delays of several weeks while the Social
Security Administration was conducting required checks on their immigration
status.

If an employer wants to hire you, it can. You have the required documents
for the employer to complete an I-9.
The employer does not legally need the SSN until it must report to the IRS,
which could be in December of the year. As a matter of *policy,* many
employers require employees to have an SSN before hiring, but it is not the
law.
See
http://www.nafsa.org/content/Profess...es/Immigration
AdvisingResources/pa2002h.pdf. This explains the delay. It is focussed on
F-1 students, but the SS Administration has the same problem with all
nonimmigrants.
See especially these questions: "Can an alien begin employment while an
application for Social Security Number is pending?" "What does an employer
who chooses to employ someone before an SSN is received have to do?"
