can't go wrong with a nice simple hugo boss suit, kenzo is another classic, and can't go wrong with an armani either...

but basically nothing naff, no double breasted either...subtle pinstripe can be good...depends on what you feel comfortable wearing, doesn't have to be a complete suit, nice trousers, decent shirt and classic sports coat could do the job just as well as a proper suit.

Thumbs up Re: Dress Code

first off, I'm not heftytiger but her husband, which makes me a pom!

i'd have to say, a black suit is preferable, don't wear a 'lounge' suit and dark blue is okay but generally deemed to be less stylish. a white shirt (not cheap plain cotton, but with some interest to it, either a thread highlight or a stripe or similar, nothing too loud, unless you can really pull it off. for the advantage, double cuffs (also known as french cuffs) and cufflinks which go well with the tie are a must in my book. if you can afford it, a nice watch (which goes with the cufflinks) is another bonus point.

a relaxed but professional attitude will see you in where all else fails, and as a 'design' professional, make sure your CV doesn't use times new roman

good luck

Yes, a black suit is definitely a good idea, but seeing that the OP seems to be in a 'creative' trade, I would go with a subtly coloured shirt rather than white (maybe pale lemon or cream?), plus an 'interesting' but non-controversial tie.

I think he said he doesn't actually own a suit. I'd say that if one is looking for a job, a suit is a must, so this may be the time to buy one. I would suggest he goes shopping at a quiet time and seeks out a helpful shop assistant (or 'associate' - hate that word!).

Not sure which place to recommend - I guess the guys here could make some suggestions. Is the OP already back in the UK? Hugo Boss is probably a good place...

I'd go for the suit, shirt and comedy tie. They should appreciate the tie if they are into 'visual' production.

yep ,, dark suit two or three buttons, single breasted, double vents, real cuffs - hate Boss though - Paul Smith now he's the man ! I have all these beautiful suits hanging up in my closet and slum it in Chinos all day here in the US dont wear a white shirt - nice subtle colour, double cuffs but no cutways - too public school boy, striped tie and I always break the rule of brown/ tan shoes with matching belt

eh - its like the bloody clothes show in here

aye, Paul Smith, quality...but fecked if I can find his stuff over here, closest was out in montreal at some weird boutique.

I ain't much of a suit wearer, but do have two decent one, an all purpose black suit, can't go wrong for weddings and funerals
and then a classic dark blue suit for interviews, of which, only wore it to two interviews, I double check dress code before hand so I don't look a tw@ turning up for 'em...hell, no one wears a suit in the games industry...

hehe..yeah, that dodgy london stuff is a laugh
But $200 for a PS shirt...ouch...though at least you can find it...probably better to order online, but when spending serious money, it's always nice to try it on first ain't it..

You could check out Brooks Brothers. They were owned by Marks and Spencers until recently and their flagship store is in Fifth Avenue, Manhatten...it's pretty upscale. They have branches around the US and they do have woollen suits inc. suits for travelling...you're probably going to need to pack a suit into a suitcase when you fly to the UK and you don't want it creased as hell...

http://www.brooksbrothers.com

Another good source for suits is the Nordstrom dept stores....they do alterations quickly and I think, free of charge.

(My husband got his last suit from the Mens Wearhouse!). I wouldn't bother with Armani, Paul Smith etc. unless you're going to get the wear out of the suit and it's also best if you can to get an extra pair of trousers to go with the jacket (although my husband has twice lost the jackets when he's gone to visit clients on hot days and left them on a train, in reception etc. and hasn't a clue where he really did leave them LOL!).

Shirts here are pants. Get a decent double cuff shirt from Next, a loudish tie from here - TJMaxx does some really cool ones at knock down prices-, cufflinks from Burlington Coat Factory if you have one in your area, they are another cheapo TJ Maxx type place, and a dark coloured suit (I'd avoid pinstripes) which I would buy here, they're cheaper than the UK although quality is not as good, it'll do ya! Don't worry about labels, get one in the sale (and there's a sale everyday here right?), noones going to know you're sitting there in a 'designer suit' trust me...
Good Luck - and how come you've managed to get an interview in the UK? No one will interview my husband when they realise he's in the States...

All the best with your interview
