Apparently, it's the limeys that done changed, not the yanks.

According to Bill Bryson's research, it's the British language/spelling that has changed too, not the American equivalent.

There is an island near me which has kept more of the original accent.

Interesting. That sounds more British than American.

Surely you mean "Colonists"?

Americans seem very proud of the fact they "kicked British butt" in 1776.... until you point out that BOTH armies were pretty much British so what they call the War of Independence was actually a British civil war fought in another country....which causes them no end of confusion & they actually shut up about it.

It also proves that if you'e going to have war....do it on some other buggers turf.. an idea the Americans have certainly taken to heart

I love it! I've met quite a number of Americans living as I do in Edinburgh, and also several as fellow students while I was at uni.......I don't think I ever met a single one who actually knew just how to "shut up!" Ever!

The British have suffered from the great vowel shift, and currently are suffering from estuary talk. Whatever happened to the good old glottle stop?

Let's face it, the American language is stuck in the Dark Ages while the British is more refined and progressive!

If you mean the glottal stop, it was an important part of the Hawai'ian language, which has all but died out.

Talking of accents.
I edited the family Disney vacation video down to a Facebook friendly 2 minutes. So I heard my own voice over and over, If I did not know I was from Liverpool, I would not know I was from Liverpool. I am having a self-identity crisis today. I fear I will be beaten up as a wooleyback or as a miscellaneous outlander next time I visit the old home town.

I think we've all agonised over that one. Eventually you decide to not give a ****.

I think you'll easily slip back into it when you visit.
