Detroit Specific AOS/EAD - In person

Hi All, My wife and I have been married 4 months and in the next week or so will go
to Detroit in person to file AOS and EAD paperwork.

Has anyone else in here had such business with the Detroit office. We have been
discouraged by a few people from mailing it: because everyone is afraid of anthrax
mail, it will take months for them to get to it. We were also told that if we went in
person, we could get receipt handed directly to us, and with **very good luck**
receive EAD same day.

Anyone please feel free to throw a pebble in the pond and dispel any of the 'too good
to be true' info I have received.

Thanx much. Dean

Insta-AOS is only for K-1s. If you got married 4 months ago, I would guess you're not
a K-1 visa holder.

In person filing of AoS in Detroit will save you the money for an EAD as well. They
will adjust the alien the same day and therefore a separate EAD will not be required
for employment. No need for "very good luck", we know that God works in Detroit INS
and hands out instant AoS for believers. However, refrain from lighting candles on
the help counter. The security guard might slap you against the wall and you'd end up
in the same place as the suspects held under the homeland security regulations.

I guess miracle 1-day AoS is only if you are adjusting from K-1 and not from
F-1 status.

I know the AOS itself is not instant...but will we be able to get in and personally
hand our documents over to someone who will look through them and give us some sort
of receipt?

Ok, this is confusing...

We didnt do K-1, I'm currently F-1. So I know the AoS itself will not be instant.

So if we go in person we get to save money on the EAD? How? i thouhgt when you nhand
in the form, you have to hand in the required fee for it as well.

Amen Sister! I know God is good, but one also has to be wise and consider
protocol/what works.

My response to your post assumed you were a K-1 case. The following from betastar is
the correct response if you are not a K-1 case. And besides, the detroit office
itself says so in the following URL.

Unfortunately, for your non K-1 adjustment, you need to MAIL your form, wait for a
letter receipt from Detroit, as well as file a 765 and pay for the EAD. The Detroit
office website says under: Local Filing Procedures
Note: Please check your form instructions to determine where you should submit your
application. With the exceptions described below, all forms that should be
submitted to the Detroit District Office, should be mailed to: USINS -
Applications
P.O. Box 14760 Detroit, MI 48214 The Detroit office no longer accepts adjustment of
status (I-485) applications in person (except for fiance adjustments--see
below); those I-485 applications that are submitted to the district office
should be submitted by mail.

Petitioners and applicants will receive a letter notifying them of the receipt of
their petitions and applications.

Exceptions: We will continue to accept in person: I-90s to replace a lost or damaged
green card; adjustment of status for fiance(e)s (Form I-485); emergent I-131s
(requests for emergency advance parole) and interim EAD (Form I-765) applications (if
the initial request has been pending for 90 days or more).
