Default Detroit INS no longer offers same-day AOS:(

I called the Detroit INS office this morning (12/04) to enquire about same-day I-485 adjustment of status for fiances to discover that they discontinued this service beginning 12/01/02! In case you are wondering, the procedure is now to go to the Detroit INS office in person to set up an interview date (which will be within a 30 day time period). No interview appointments can be made over the phone. The phone number there is (313) 568-6030 if anyone has questions.

Detroit INS stopped doing I-485 adjustments in person for spouses
aswell, long before 12/1/02. I was told by one of the officers there
that we had to file by mail and notification of an interview would be
scheduled for us, and a letter mailed out.

Nicole, if you go to the INS office in person to schedule the interview,
you might want to make sure you get there at least half an hour before
they open. I was in there at 10:00 a couple of weeks ago and they were
PACKED. I didn't get out of there until well after 12:00 and all I was
doing was standing in line to ask a simple question. A gentleman sitting
in the waiting area mentioned that he had gotten there at 8:00 and he
wasn't even close to being called yet. *sigh*

Best time to arrive at Detroit INS is the time at which they open the parking lot, which is 6:30am if I remember well. You will be in and out REALLY fast. By that time, you h\will have at most 10 people in front of you. If you want any information about the Detroit INS office, let me know. I know a bit about them...

Yes, that is true. The Detroit district office used to do interviews as
fiancés walked through the door. That came to a halt when the one officer
who does these interviews and other tasks at the office received 18 fiancé
applicants in one day. The new procedure is that you must wait in line for
a number, then the officer will give you an appointment for an interview.
They envision that they will schedule these interviews on Mondays. The good
thing is that the couple does not have to be present to receive the
interview appointment. One of the couple, or the attorney need to drop off
the application.

Default Detroit AOS info

We arrived at 6:30am on 12/05 and that was a wise move since we weren't even seen until close to 9:00am. Every seat in the office was taken by 8:00am.

We were given a number when we entered, #3 in the "applicant" category. There were 3 or 4 different categories, but the Detroit office was short staffed (our info officer told us that they lost 8 officers the week prior) so the 2 info officers working that day were alternating between categories.

Our interview appointment is scheduled for 10:30am on 12/16.

FYI - This INS office is in a really bad area (i.e., burned out cars and boarded up windows) so it's a good idea to lock your doors when you get off the Mt Elliot exit. We also felt like we had gone too far after exiting, but it really is several miles down Mt Elliot from the exit.

FYI for anyone else needing to go to the INS office. DO NOT exit at Mt.
Elliott off of I-94. This will, as Nicole mentioned, take you through a
very bad area of the city. Instead, use these directions:

From North of Detroit: Take I-94 West to I-75 South, and follow the
signs to merge on I-375 (once you have merged onto I-75, stay in one of
the two left lanes to merge onto I-375). Exit at Jefferson EAST (there
are two Jefferson Ave. exits, East and West. East is the one you want.)
You will then turn left on Jefferson (I believe it's the second light
after you have gotten off the freeway) and take that to Mt. Elliott.
Turn right on Mt. Elliott and the INS building is right on the corner,
the parking lot is the first one on the right.

If you need directions from the south or west, please feel free to email
me. I work a lot in downtown Detroit so I know my way around pretty well.

I wish I would have seen your directions before we left for the interview this morning! Oh well, we didn't have any problems on Mt Elliot. Although, we did have to wait 1 hr 45 mins after our appointment time to be seen (but we were in and out after 10 mins with the info officer with no difficulties). Danny got the stamp in his passport, but it could take up to 9 months to get the physical resident card! Ah, the bureaucracy.
