Default DCF Update - VISA APPROVED :-)

On Dec. 20th, I posted a message regarding my husband's DCF interview in
Auckland, New Zealand. As a follow-up, just wanted to let everyone know
that we received a call later on the 20th from the consulate letting us know
that they had received the medical and the e-mail copy of the CV that we had
sent. All was in order and Trevor's visa could be picked up on Dec. 27th!!!
We are so pleased and excited.

I called back, as Trevor took the original call, to thank the woman who has
been so helpful and patient through the whole process and she said "I'm not
leaving for my Christmas break until everything is ready for your visa. You
can pick it up on Dec. 24th." How's that for service? I can't say enough
good things about all of the people that we dealt with at the consulate,
outside of the actual interviewer who was kind, but vague.

Now we just have to make it through the POE in February and the adjustment
of status a year and 9 months from now!

Thanks for all of your help and support!

Congratulations.

But note, it is 1 year and 9 months from when he enters the US not from now. He may have the visa but it has not been activated and won't be until he enters the US.

I would love any info you are able to give me! My husband and I have been waiting for info from the vsc . We just found out about DCF. My husband is in New Zealand. I think I have been speaking to the same wonderful patient lady you have dealt with!! She told me this process shouldn't be so hard and that I should go to NZ and file there. I hardly believed her that my husband might have his visa in the 3-5 days she said they would! I am so happy to see that it is a possiblity!!!!!!! Congrats! She arranged an appoinment for us for Jan 30th. Do you have any advice or information? How soon before the interview was the medical done? I am really worried that we wont have everything we need. We have been married almost a year and i don't want to ruin our chances so any information or helpful advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!! Thank you and have a fantastic Holiday!

Hi, there. I would be happy to answer any specific questions you have. You
can send e-mail to my address: [email protected] . My husband and I also
thought
it sounded to good to be true that DCF could shorten the process so
drastically, but it seems to be the case. Our timeline is as follows:

10/7/02 called and requested DCF packet from consulate
10/10/02 received packet from consulate containing Petition for Alien
Relative, Instructions for Immisgrant Visa Applications Checklist, DS-230
Part I, Affadavit of Support & N.Z Police
Clearance request form
11/15/02 Sent checklist, DS-230 and police clearance to consulate with
cover letter requesting an interview in mid-January
11/18/02 Received packet from consulate with medical info, DS-230 Part 2
and our interview appointment scheduled for Dec. 19th
11/22/02 Got married in Auckland, New Zealand
11/26/02 Medical
12/19/02 Had interview at consulate. Were denied visa on grounds that
they required a CV and had not received the medical from the doctor
12/20/02 Received phone call from consulate that they had received the
medical and CV. Visa would be ready for pick up on Dec. 24th.

How far are you into the process going through the INS in the states?

The medical that my husband had was a breeze. The doctor was very laid back
and friendly. Trev was only required to get one jab. The biggest problem
we had with the medical was that even though Trevor had his medical 3 weeks
prior to our interview, as was recommended on the letter from he consulate,
they had not received it before our interview. We called the doctor after
the interview and they told us that they had "misplaced" it and it had gone
out in the mail on Dec. 18th. If I had it to do over again, I would have
phoned the consulate several days before the interview to make sure that
they had received the medical and subsequently followed up with the doctor.

The only other snag was that they wanted Trevor's CV or information
regarding his savings, assets, etc. to show that if something happened to
me, that he would be able to support us. My understanding was that as long
as I met the requirements for the AOS, then that's all we needed. It ended
up not being a huge deal because we just sent it to them via e-mail the next
day. It was just a disappointment at the time, because we had checked and
rechecked to make sure we had everything. On the paperwork, it says you
need one OR the other, but not both, so it might just be specific for
Auckland? I don't know.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
Regards,
Amy

Thank you so much for your reply!
My husband and I were actually going to settle in New Zealand. Due to an unforseen circumstance, my son and I are not able to go to NZ at the moment. So we had already started the visa process there after we got married. We were due to move in July but had to stay in the US. So the waiting for the move to NZ slowed our process a bit.
This is our timeline.
3/29/02 We got married in Christchurch, NZ
10/17/02 sent I 130 petition to VSC
10/22/02 first NOA
12/12/02 recieved first packet of info from the consulate regarding DCF
Instructions for Immisgrant Visa Applications Checklist, DS-230
Part I, Affadavit of Support & N.Z Police
Clearance request form
12/14/02 Sent checklist, DS-230 and police clearance to consulate with
cover letter requesting an interview in end of January
12/19/02
Received packet from consulate with medical info, DS-230 Part 2
and our interview appointment scheduled for Jan 30th

So now we just wait and see. I fly into Auckland on the 30th and my husband will fly up to meet me there and we will go to the consulate. You don't happen to know of a website like mapquest for NZ? we both have no idea how to get there for the airport!!:-)

Is the police clearance request all the consulate needs? Do they do the check or does my husband have to go to the police station and get it himself?

Thanks for the advice about the medical. We will make sure that we follow it up with the Dr. and the consulate.

You asked about where we were with our filing in the US. Well, We applied in October and recieved only our first NOA and on that form it says that it takes anywhere from 150-999 days to process this type of case. I have rung them several times to only find out that no applications have been moved sine June 12th. She said I had at least another 6 months. just for the I 130 tp be processed, then we have to wait or the visa! :-(

I will be sure to bring my husbands CV!!

After I posted this I found your description of the day you went for your interview. I just want to say thank you so much because now at least I have some kind of idea on what to expect. It is such a nerve wraking experience. I just hope things go as well for us. fingers and toes crossed!!!!

Where are you from in the states? I hope you enjoy your time in NZ!! When will you be going back to the states?
I am a little worried as well that we have a bit of a time frame so I hope things go well for us.
Have a very merry christmas and thank you again for posting your experience, it has given us hope!!

Take care!

Hi, Heather. I'm happy to help. When Trevor & I first started going
through the process, we couldn't seem to find other Kiwi's in the same boat.
It's nice to know that there are others out there.

The site like mapquest is http://www.wises.co.nz I've never used it myself
before, so I can't vouch for how accurate it is. I tried to do a search for
US Embassy, but was unable to. The consulate is on the corner of Commerce
and Customs St in the Citibank building, so I used from: Auckland
International Airport to: CUSTOMS (EAST) Street, CITY CENTRE, Auckland and
came up with a map ;-) Hope that helps.

FYI...there is a mall across the street and down one block. So, if you have
to kill some time you can go grab some coffee or chill out (They have a
Starbuck's if you are in to that ;-) The embassy itself doesn't have
parking that I know of, but there are plenty of car parks around the area.
If it's helpful, I can give you more details.

The Police Clearance is all you need. The Embassy takes it from there. I
would just have your husband ring the embassy before the interview date and
double check that the embassy has received it (as well as the medical ;-)

As far as the interview itself goes, everyone is kind and tries to answers
your questions. Once you get into the room with the 5 booths and you've
been told which one to queue in, if there is someone having an interview,
you can have a seat. When they are done, get up and wait for someone to
talk to you. If no one at all is at the window, there is a little buzzer
(looks like a doorbell) that you can push and someone will come up to the
window. That part was all quite confusing for us because there are no real
instructions once you get in there and the other people in the chairs didn't
seem to know what was going on either.

I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We are in the process of making travel
arrangements for the second week of February. I will have been in New
Zealand for 6 months by the time I leave. Trevor and I have spent a fair
amount of time traveling the North Island and it's been a great opportunity
to see his country. It's beautiful. I've also had the opportunity to
establish a relationship with his family, as well. (I couldn't have asked
for better in-laws )

If you have any other questions, please let me know. What time is your
flight coming in on the 30th? Are you guys staying in Auckland?

Good Luck and Happy Holidays
Amy

Hi there Amy!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your family!
Thank you for the info on the map, and the mall!! We are both flying into Auckland, me from the states and him from the south island at 730 am on the 30th. Our appoinment is mid morning. we are not sure what the best way to get to the consulate will be yet. We may take a taxi or bus but we haven't figured out how far the airport is from town. Craig has only been in Auckland to stop in the airport. We have LOTS of time to kill as our flight doesn't leave TO go to Christchurch until 8ish.. so the mall will be a fun thing to do!!!! If you have any other ideas on how to keep busy while in Auckland or what the best most reliable mode of transportation is, I would love to hear them! It will be the first time I have seen my husband since September 9th so I don't think anything going on around us will matter!!;-)

We will be traveling the second week of february as well. Even if his visa isn't ready. he will most likely come over for a little while. I hope that we have all of our information as we will be in Christchurch if we are missing something for the visa.

Craig's medical appointment is for January 6th. When do you think we should call to check on the police clearance and medical?

Do you bring the tax info and is it the I 864 on the day of the appointment? or does it have to be mailed prior to the appoinment?

One last question and i promise I will try not to be so nosey ;-)

DO they give you approval right there and then tell you your visa will be ready at this time. Or do they tell you that they will ring you with the answer?

I hope you have been able to enjoy your stay. It is such a gorgeous place. I have really enjoyed getting to know so much about it! and to think, before I met my husband. I thought New Zealand was part of OZ!! My husband will never let me live that down!!

Thank you again for all of your help! I am so happy to be able to have some kind of guidance in this sometimes very overwhelming and frustrating process!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Hi, Heather.

We had a wonderful holiday. My husband is still on holiday and his son is
staying with us, so we are having heaps of fun at the beach, playing
mini-golf & visiting family and friends. I was hoping that you got to see
my last post, so I was glad to see your response.

Auckland airport is 21km south-west of the city center. A free shuttle
service operates between the international and domestic terminals. The
Airbus Shuttle runs a scheduled service every 20 minutes between the airport
and Downtown Auckland. The approximate cost is $13 per person. Door-to-door
shuttles also operate to and from the airport for approximately $20 for one
person and $25 for two. A taxi to/from the airport will cost around $50.
You might be able to store your luggage at the airport, since you are flying
on to Christchurch the same night, so you don't have to drag it into
Auckland with you and just take into the city what you need.

There are tons of things to do in Auckland. I would recommend the Sky Tower
which is within walking distance of the consulate, The American Express
Viaduct (there are some nice cafes, pubs and restaurants right on the water
front - very romantic ;-) and a walk down Queen Street. You could also take
the fairy to Devonport. It's quaint, good for a short trip and you get to
see Auckland by water. You can check this stuff and other things out on
this web site. http://www.aucklandnz.com/index.html

Enjoy your time in New Zealand. It's a beautiful country with warm and
friendly people. The atmosphere, even in Auckland, is quite laid back. It'
s a great time of year to be coming, as most days are warm (around 75-80
lately) and sunny. Although I'm sure not of that will matter a great deal,
as being able near to your husband will be the main attraction. :-) My
husband and I were also separated 2 different times for 4 months each, so I
can relate (we weren't married at the time, but it was still really hard)

I would call the consulate by Jan. 27th to make sure that they have received
the medical and police reports.

As for the I-864, it depends if you have them pre-process your file. We had
them pre-processed, so I got the I-864 notarized and filed the Petition for
Alien Relative at the same time that Trevor had his visa interview. If you
go that route, you don't need to send anything for the I-864 early. For the
tax info, if you are not having a co-sponsor and did not file jointly last
year, you will need your tax transcripts and not your W-2's. If you have
any questions as to what to bring, give the consulate a call at (64 + 9)
303-2724 EXT 227 or 228 between the hours of 2-4 (Auckland time) , Mon -
Fri. They are really helpful and in our experience, try to make the process
as easy and painless as possible.

If you have everything you need when you go in for the interview, they
should be able to tell you that day whether you get the visa or not. If
they don't approve you that day, it will most likely be because they need
additional info/documents and once they receive those, you will get your
approval. You have to take a large (15 x 11) Registered or Courier Pack
self-addressed envelope for them to mail out your completed visa.

If you have any other questions, just let me know. I know how nerve
wracking it can be to get everything together and the anticipation is the
worst part. Good Luck and we'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

Where will you guys be living in the states? You can feel free to send me
e-mails at [email protected]

Take care,
Amy

Hey, Craig.
This is Amy, Trev's wife. He's at work, so I thought I would take a stab at
answering your question. Hope it's not too late. I just told Trev today
that I wondered if Heather was on the plane and that you guys would be going
for your interview tomorrow. We'll be thinking of you.

About the bank statements, etc. If you guys meet the I-864 requirements
with Heather's income, etc, it's not a big deal. Definitely take your CV.
They wanted to make sure that Trev would be able to keep us above water if I
lost my job while in the states. If you have bank statements, assets, etc -
it doesn't hurt to take them, but for us it was not necessary.

Good Luck. We'll be thinking of you and might see you on Dec. 10th. I
called Air New Zealand today and there is a strike scheduled for that day
for the flight we are on to LA. They told us to call 24 hours before the
flight to verify that everything was still on schedule. If there is a
strike, they will "try to do everything possible to accommodate us." So,
we'll all need to keep our fingers crossed.

Good luck and let us know how everything goes. Hope this helped to answer
your question

Amy & Trevor

Hi, Heather & Craig

Congratulations!!!!! I can imagine how happy you are. We're so glad to
here that all went well for the 2 of you and you got the visa. Thanks for
your e-mail. We were out of town for the weekend and I'm just now getting
around to catching up on e-mails. So many things to get done before Monday.
I'm sure you guys can relate.

I hope you are enjoying your time in New Zealand, Heather. We found out
this weekend that the Air NZ strike has been postponed at least until March,
so it looks like everything else going well, we will all be flying out on
the 10th.

Thanks for the info about the third line in LA at customs. Trev said he
thought he remembered something like that, but it's great to have the
confirmation.

Once again, congratulations!!!! See you on Monday.

Amy & Trev
