Default DCF and SSN

Hello - I shall be flying to the US to be with my hubby on the 14th September, having just done DCF. However, I'm applying for jobs now, and many of them require a social security number.

When will I be able to apply for a social security number, and how long does it normally take for it to arrive? Failing that, where can I get this information?

Thank you!

Kath

With the I-551 stamp in your passport you could go to an SSA office the
day you arrive should you wish. My wife used the stamp when we did this
2 days after her arrival in 2002 via DCF in London. We were in the SSA
office less than 15 minutes (on a weekday morning). I can't recall how
long it took for the number to arrive but it was probably less than 2
weeks, perhaps even sooner

Are you filling out application forms that require the SSN? Just
curious. I've not personally been in a situation where the number is
needed so early in the job process

usually, the employer asks for SSN only during the final stage, after all the negotiations, offers/counteroffers and finally hiring you. Then you go to the human resources dept and show them that you have the right to work legally - SSN and GC (or stamp), fill out all the tax forms, etc.

You don't really need SSN when you are just looking for a job.
