Confused about EAD
I'm in the process of trying to get the K3. I know that I can get employment
authorization, but that I do have to go through the whole EAD/SSN ordeal.
The only thing I'm not sure about is how this all works. I've heard about
people getting it at the POE, but I've also heard that the form should be
sent to Chicago.
I'd generally cross at the Sarnia, Ontario/Port Huron, MI border crossing..
but any in Ontario is fine if they do it and my usual one doesn't (going to
Indiana). Is it possible to do it at the POE, or does it need to be sent to
Chicago? I'm not expecting it to be a quick process, as with anything else,
but I would think getting it as I go across would be significantly less time
than dealing with Chicago again

Re: Confused about EAD
It would have been wonderful to get the EAD at the POA... but as far as I am informed, that is not possible. I know that at certain POA's there are temporary EAD's given out for people with K1 (if they haven't changed that in the last couple of months)... but that doesn't seem to be that case with you.
You have several options now:
1) File your EAD form along with the Adjustment of Status (AOS) at your local USCIS office... some offices will issue the EAD as you are there, some will just take a couple of weeks (you should check on the procedures of your local USCIS office!!!). The problem with that is, that you need all the providing documents for the AOS first, and that appears to be a problem sometimes (e.g. with the taxes!!!)
2) You file your EAD form at the Chicago office, and wait for its approval. ... if you haven't heard of them within 90 days (of your first NOA??... and after getting fingerprinted and everything) then you can go to your local USCIS office, and get a EAD untill your actual card arrives.
May anyone please correct me, if I posted some wrong infromation!!!
Good luck to you!!!

Re: Confused about EAD
From what I have read in this NG/Forum, only K1s can get the stamp at POE. K3s can't.
Sorry.

Re: Confused about EAD
S&V,
Right on - K3 isn't entitiled to EAD on entry. They've got to apply for it.
Once it's in-hand, apply for a SS #. Then they can work.
Simple really. But time consuming.
