Default Conditional Permanent Resident and possible seperation

I'm glad you brought this up, as the situation for myself and my foreign
wife is almost the same. We have been married just over a year and things
have not turned out as we expected. We are considering divorce as well. I
spoke to a girl at BCIS yesterday and she said that my wife can go to the
interview by herself and tell them the marriage was bonafide, and if I
wanted, I could give her an affidavit stating the same to take with her. In
my case, I don't think she wants to stay here in the US after we divorce,
but the way the BCIS woman spoke, it seems like it wouldn't be that much of
a problem. I don't know for sure, as I have never been down this road
before.
Also, the largest complication for us is that my wife is 5 months
pregnant, and we are having a hard time getting through this. Neither of us
intended to have children(or so I thought) in the near future, so this has
caused a lot of stress between us. We found out she was pregnant 2 weeks
ago(she was 18 weeks at that point), so I've been feeling like I got
hoodwinked sometimes. I don't believe in my heart that she intentionally got
pregnant, but in my head, I have had a hard time accepting that she didn't
realize for 4 1/2 months. Things have been rocky between us for a while now,
and this situation is impossibly hard for both of us.
We are talking about her staying here until after the child is born and
then her returning home. I have no idea what to do in this situation. The
one thing that really scares me is if she wants to stay here, and is granted
an unconditional green card, I am financially responsible to the
government for any public assistance she may collect for the next 9 years.
Please don't think that I'm trying to avoid alimony or child support if we
separate, as that is not the case. What does worry me is that if she decides
to stay here in the US and we get divorced, I could wind up paying alimony
and child support only to have her apply for public assistance and have the
government come looking for repayment of the benefits she received over the
course of the next 9 years, even if she remarries and has other children.
I'm sure I'll take a lot of heat over this post, and maybe I deserve it,
but I'm also looking for any constructive suggestions, if such a thing
exists for my present predicament.
