car insurance for teen driver - any suggestions?
My 17 and a bit year old has just completed her driver's ed and should be driving very shortly. We are looking at cars for her just now. I like the look of the Kia Soul - it's cheap and has a long warranty - perfect for her. But we have called a few insurance companies and they are pricing the insurance at around $2,500-$4000 PER 6 MONTHS. Even for a base model with 4 doors! Am I missing something? That seems extraordinarily expensive. Any ideas to get the cost down? Are there any companies who deal especially with teen drivers?

It would probably cost much less (although it will still be expensive) to add her to your insurance rather than attempting to take out a completely separate policy for her.

You'd think so. But I called 21st Century (the company we have our car insurance with) first of all and they quoted $2,800 for 6 months. The problem is that they are happy to insure her to drive the Kia Soul but they also are insuring her to drive my V8 5.6 litre Armada and my husband's Camaro :blink: They cannot just cover her for her own car. Thing is, she will NEVER get to drive the Camaro and will not drive my car again after she gets her licence. Then we tried a whole load of other companies and they were around the same price (for a stand alone policy). I see kids whizzing around my neighbourhood in big shiny trucks, snazzy gas guzzling Mustangs and all other sorts of other pricey vee-hicles. Surely their parents are not spending this kinda money on insurance are they? I thought the little Kia would have been a good, sensible and affordable option but it seems not! Maybe I am being a little unrealistic?

Not necessarily, thats why we use an agent through Farmers, due to my husbands 2 cars being expensive and requiring specialist insurance, we had to ensure my son wasn't on his policies, it can be done.

If you have another driver in the household, even one with their own vehicle and separate insurance, since that driver is a family member it was my belief that your rates would go up automatically because of the additional driver and more so because it is a teenager with a spanking new license and driver's record. So don't be surprised if 21st Century doesn't up your rates. Saying she won't be allowed to drive you car is pointless. She is a member of the household with access to the car keys.
And yes, families will pay that rate for insurance. It is the age of privilege and entitlement remember.

We've just put our 16 year old on our insurance for an extra $1000 a year with allstate.

Either that or sell your monster cars.... They could also get an old banger, that'll help and then state minimums. |
