Cannot meet income requirements for I-864
My husband received his notice of interview for AOS for November 6.
We live in Silicon Valley, California and I have been laid off most of the
year. My husband has his EAD but has been unable to find work either. There
is a real recession here because employers are demanding more experience and
education just because they can, and we have a plethera of skilled and
highly educated people in this area out of tech jobs.
Anyway... we are scared because we don't think we can meet the income
requirements to get the AOS approved. We do not own a home, our vehicles are
not worth much and we don't have any stocks, bonds, or other assets.
My mom did apply to be a co-sponser but she has also been out of work almost
all year. We have no one else to sponser my husband. I do receive UI
benefits but it is nowhere near the income required and they run out soon.
We are actively looking for jobs but are hitting dead-ends every day.
Any suggestions/ideas on what to do??

Damn but you are between a rock and a hard place aren't you.
Can either of you take any type of employment that will generate enough money to sponsor the household. For two people you only need about $15,000.
YOu can either ask to have the interview rescheduled. Make up a good excuse and hope that they take another six months to reschedule. Or go to the interview and they will probably give you a few weeks to find a sponsor.
Hoping you find employment quickly. Even an computer aid in a school would be good. My husband does that and the pay sucks but it exceeds the guidelines by a few thousand.

For Silly Valley, $15000 per year should be relatively easy to obtain.
I believe that both incomes can count if you are married and living
together for more than 6 months. Please understand, I am not suggesting
that
they aren't worth more than $15000 per year, but if you need to show
income,
then that should be an easy level to obtain. If you have no assets, and
don't
own your home, I can't imagine living in Silly Valley on $15000.
Good luck...

I also have a daughter, so we need to meet the requirements for 3 people.
We are lucky enough to live in an apartment where we pay very little for
rent, and I did get work for 3 months of this year. I had an interview at a
company recently. A part-time position with decent pay but all it demanded
was experience in "food coordination" (ordering food for meeting), making
sure there was coffee on for the staff, and misc. other duties. Way below my
skill level. However they also had a huge demand for the job, people with
Masters degrees for example. The company knew they could be very picky and I
eventually went through 3 interviews, as well as them asking for some of my
time so they could "test me" to see how I could do with a couple of unpaid
hours in their office doing the work.
This is an example of how bad it has become here economically. I did not get
the job.
My husband is going to apply at Orchard Supply Hardware. He's applied at the
school districts, but California just cut $60 million from the state budget.
It came out of schools, counties, etc., of course.
They do count my husband's income too, I assume. Even though I am
"financially responsible" for him?

Re: Cannot meet income requirements for I-864
Hi,
I think under the circumstances just about any job would do.
I have 30 years experience in the entertainment and convention industry and it is taking me time to make some contacts. I have applied for the job as Promotions Director of the local radio station, however in the meantime (and I'm not decrying or belittling anyone) but I start at Seven11 tomorrow
stacking shelves, clearing rubbish, working on the tills !!! and generally "making myself useful"
It's not ideal, but needs must until I find the right job or have
set up my own business.
At least I'm here with "the missus" and we appreciate it is going to take time to settle in, so Seven11 it is for now.

Thanks Ron,
They did offer me the graveyard shift (midnight-8am) but still being a newly wed - 1st Anniversary yesterday, the last thing I need is to "swap Hi's" with my wife on the steps, certainly not for an extra $2 an hour.
Needs must, but not that much !!
