I met a man who was born and is living in the United States. I was born and live in
Canada. We want to marry and reside in the States but have no idea what the first
step is, or how long it takes. Don't even know how to arrange for the marriage
license...we plan to marry in the Carribean. Also, will I be able to work there? Any
advice or related sites I can visit? Thanks!

Several ways for you to do this. But none of them are easy or quick. You can apply for a Fiancee Visa and after approval come to the US and marry him and file for adjustment of status to conditional permanent resident but you cannot marry outside of the US so the Caribbean is out of the question.
If you do marry in the Caribbean, you return to Canada and he returns to the US and he files the I-130 for you and after about a year you will interview in the US Consulate in Montreal and if approve will enter the US as a permanent resident. Or if you don't want to wait that long he files the I-130 and after the first Notice of Action on this application, he then files an I-129 for a K-3 visa for you. This will take about 3 to 6 months and after interviewing at the US Consulate you can enter the US and apply for adjustment of status.

It seems complicated but it really isn't. Just a lengthy process not unlike a non-refugee trying to migrate to Canada.

Thanks for the information and the reference sites. With regard to the marriage
lisence, how do we obtain one? Does he look after that in the US, since that is where
we will live, and from the information I've seen, likely marry.

Here is a website with US state requirements for marriage - each state has it own
rules. http://www.world-wideweddings.com/Re...ents/index.htm Take Care. Shelley
