I "informally" adopted my stepchildren. I said something like, "Hey, how would you like it if I was your dad rather than your biological father?" and they said "Oh... okay! Sounds cool." I'm pretty sure a "formal" adoption involves lawyers and paperwork, and the movement of green paper-like stuff from one pocket to another!
