We just got back from our AOS interview. The officer said they are waiting for my name check although they already got the finger print reports. He told us that he will mail us an approval letter after as soon as he gets the name check back. Then we can go back to stamp the passport. Can anyone tell us what is this name check? And how long does that take?

It seems a new background check or name check is needed. The INS
is contracting this work out. They use a computer database to hold
the results of the background check. It appears it gets updated as
the contractor returns completed checks. The INS officer who did
you interview will keep your file in a stack with people who also had
a successful interview and are waiting the check. It appears there
is limiter access to the background check computer, ie one terminal
shared by all the officers. When your officer gets time on the
computer they will go through the stack to see if your name has been
added yet. If not you go back on the stack and wait till the next
time the officer get time to use the background check computer
terminal.
At my wife's interview in early March the officer was chatty about the
process so I am fairly confident with my description above. He
actually got up during our interview and checked if my wife's name
was on the computer. We asked very nicely if he would do this for us.
Her name was not; he even showed us the computer print out saying
her name was not in the database yet. At the end of the interview he
put her file on a stack of about 20 files just like ours.
My conclusion is that is will be hard to predict how long it will take
between the interview and the letter of approval. It depends on the
background check contractor and on how often the officer goes
through their stack to recheck.

Scott: I have spent the last several months contacting the INS, my congressman, two senators and NONE of them have provided me with anything remotely as helpful as what you just presented. They have been so uncooperative that I was beginning to think the worst - thanks for shedding some light on the subject - no one else has so far...
